All applicants must register through the government jobs portal and apply online. The online application consists of two (2) parts:
  1. Application - personal application information
  2. Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire - assessment of the applicant’s qualifications
Sections 1-2 must be submitted online. You must complete BOTH sections before your application can be processed.

Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire (T&Q)

The Security Officer Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire is a set of questions that may assess certain competencies such as the ability to handle stressful situations, ability to organize and manage assignments, interpersonal skills, writing ability, and other knowledge skills and abilities. There are total of 31 questions, (multiple-choice and 3 short essays).

The candidates' responses to the Security Officer Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire will be submitted to an expert review panel for evaluation. The expert review panel will assign a numerical score to each candidate based on an assessment of each candidate's qualifications as described on the candidate's training and Experience Questionnaire.

What’s next?
Candidates that meet the minimum requirements of the Application and the Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire will be invited to take the Multiple Choice Test.

Multiple-Choice Test

The qualifying multiple-choice test will be administered and proctored on-line, and the following competencies may be evaluated: written communication, reading comprehension, interpersonal skills, and other knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Candidates invited to participate in the qualifying on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test from a remote location using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the qualifying multiple-choice test on-line. It is anticipated that the remote proctored qualifying multiple-choice test will be administered during the dates listed below:

MONDAY, JULY 6, 2020 TO MONDAY, JULY 13, 2020

You must score a minimum of 70% to pass and your score is valid for 2 years. You may take the Security Officer multiple-choice test only once every 24 months. Test results will be emailed to you.

What’s next?
Once you pass the Multiple Choice Test, you will then receive an email regarding the Personal History Statement (PHS). However, you can start gathering the information required. A copy of the (PHS) can be obtained here.

Personal History Statement (PHS)

Completion and submission of a Personal History Statement (PHS) is the first step of the Background Investigation. The Personal History Statement consists of 25 pages. It is part of the background investigation portion of the Selection Process. This form is very extensive and requires that you obtain several documents not readily available to you. You must fill out this form prior to your initial background. A copy of the PHS can be obtained online at www.lawa.org/joinlaxsecurity under Forms.

Time to think ahead and prepare…
You will be required to furnish an original and a copy of the following documents to proceed with the Background Investigation:
  1. Current Driver’s License
  2. Certified copy of your Birth certificate and/or U.S. Passport
  3. Sealed College Transcripts (If you do not meet the employment requirements)
  4. Certificate of Naturalization or application for citizenship (if applicable)
  5. Child Support documents (If applicable)
  6. Bankruptcy documents
  7. Driving Record online print out – www.dmv.ca.gov (printouts are $2.00)
  8. Proof of vehicle insurance
  9. Marriage and/or divorce documents (if applicable)
  10. Probation agreements (if applicable)
  11. Traffic accident reports
  12. Military discharge DD-214 (If applicable)
  13. Original Notarized Release and Waiver
  14. Social Security Card
  15. TransUnion Credit Report (free) – www.transunion.com/annual-credit-report
Begin to gather these documents now. Any delay in obtaining these documents will delay your consideration for employment.

Department Interview

Department Interview

The Department Interview is conducted by a panel of 2 (typically 1 Security Supervisor and 1 Interview Specialist representing the City) to assess your personal accomplishments, job motivation, instrumentality, interpersonal skills, continuous learning orientation, and oral communication skills. The interview is approximately 30 minutes. The interview is on a pass/fail basis.

What’s next?
If you successfully pass the Department Interview, you will move forward to the Background Investigation.

Background Investigation

In the Background Investigation phase you will meet your Background Investigator and a thorough investigation will be conducted. The Background Investigation includes checks of employment, police, financial, education, and military records and interviews with family members, neighbors, supervisors, co-workers, and friends. The investigation may take from 60 to 180 days to complete. You will be evaluated on your past behavior and the extent to which your behavior demonstrates positive traits that support your candidacy for Security Officer. You will be notified if additional information is required. The findings of the background investigation are valid for 12 months.

NOTE: Make sure you fill out, notarize and turn in the Release and Waiver. The Field Investigation cannot begin if your Release and Waiver has not been submitted.

Command Interview

The Command Review (interview) is a conducted by Los Angeles Airport Police Command Staff to assess character, decision-making, interpersonal skills, knowledge about the department and motivation to join the Los Angeles Airport Police Department. The interview is approximately 30 minutes. The interview is on a pass/fail basis. Only those candidates who pass this part of the process will receive a Conditional Job Offer.

Upon review and approval of your Background Investigation, personnel from the Airport Police Hiring Unit will contact you to schedule you for a Command Review.

  • Valid State or Federal issued photo identification card. Any candidate who does not have a valid State or Federal issued photo identification card WILL NOT be allowed to take the test.
You will be notified telephonically of your Command Review results within 3 business days by the Airport Police Hiring Unit.

If you successfully pass the Command Review then you can schedule your Medical and Psychological Evaluation via your myPD portal.

Medical Evaluation

The Medical Evaluation is thorough and it is essential that you be in excellent health with no conditions, which would restrict your ability to safely perform the essential functions of a Security Officer. Candidates must undergo a comprehensive medical examination given by a City physician.

Physical Requirements
Strength to perform average lifting up to 15 pounds and occasionally over 25 pounds; good speaking and hearing ability; and good eyesight including normal color and night vision.

Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodation will be evaluated on an individual basis and depend, in part, on the specific requirements for the job, the limitations related to the disability, and the ability of the hiring department to accommodate the limitation.

Hearing
Candidates must be able to understand speech in noisy areas, understand whispered speech, and localize sounds. Specialized testing methods are used to determine hearing capability. Although hearing aid use is not automatically disqualifying, additional specialized tests will be administered to determine if the use of hearing aids will be permitted.

Vision
Vision must be at least 20/30 in each eye with the following exceptions. If glasses are worn, vision must be at least 20/30 in each eye while wearing the glasses and uncorrected distance vision must not exceed 20/70 in either eye and the better eye must be at least 20/40. If soft contact lenses are worn, they must have been worn for at least three months and vision must be at least 20/30 in each eye tested with the contacts in. If a LASIK procedure (refractive surgery) was performed, vision must be at least 20/30 in each eye. In addition, candidates must be able to accurately and quickly name colors, and must be free from other visual impairments that would restrict the ability to perform security duties.

If you know you had prior treatment or a major injury, go to your doctor in advance and bring your records with you to the examination.

NOTE: Parking is not available at Medical Services Division (MSD). You may park at the lot on the corner of Alameda and Temple for the designated fee or at the meters located by.

Items to bring:
  • Valid State or Federal issued photo identification card.
  • Candidates should bring the letter from their hiring department notifying them that they have been scheduled for a medical evaluation.
You will be notified of your Medical Examination results within 5 to 7 business days via mail, however; there is no specified time frame as results vary per individual. Medical examination results are valid for up to 12 months, at the discretion of the City's medical staff.

Fingerprints

You will receive notification from Human Resources regarding your fingerprint appointment. Please bring the following items with you on the day of your appointment; failure to do so will delay your hiring process:
  • Valid California Driver’s License or California ID, AND
  • Valid U.S. Passport OR an original or certified copy of Birth Certificate, AND
  • Social Security Card

Conditional Job Offer

The conditional job offer guarantees you a position based up on the condition that you passed the medical evaluation and you clear all fingerprints.

If you successfully pass all application/test parts you will be added to our certified list for hire and will receive an official start date.
