FIRST LOS ANGELES AIRPORT POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY 10-YEARS AGO, REMEMBERED WITH MEMORIAL RUN

(Los Angeles, California – April 29, 2015) The Fourth Annual Tommy E. Scott 5K Memorial Run took place today at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Airport Police Station. The 5K run was hosted by the Los Angeles Airport Police, Emergency Services Unit and held in honor of Airport Police Officer Tommy E. Scott, who was killed in the line of duty ten years ago today.

Officer Scott joined the Los Angeles Airport Police in 2001 and was 35 years old at the time of his death. He was the first Airport Police Officer to die in the line of duty, April 29, 2005. Officer Scott was killed after stopping a suspicious man in a vehicle near the fence line at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The suspect, William Sadowski, was convicted of carjacking and first-degree murder on November 16, 2009, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The 5K memorial run began at the Airport Police Station at 6320 West 96th Street, Los Angeles, crossed the 96th Street Bridge, turned north onto Sepulveda Boulevard, west onto Westchester Parkway, and south onto a stretch of Lincoln Boulevard where a memorial is installed against the north perimeter fence. The run then ended at the Airport Police Station.

“Tommy Scott made the ultimate sacrifice,” Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said. “Not only will we remember him as a fine police officer but more importantly we will remember him as a man of great integrity, honesty and compassion.”

The 5K run was open to all airport police personnel. Donations may be made to the Tommy E. Scott Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Association of Airport Employees. The Tommy E. Scott Scholarship Fund is available to college-bound children of airport employees.

The Los Angeles Airport Police Division is the nation's premier, aviation law-enforcement agency with over 1,100 specially trained police officers, security officers, and civilian staff protecting Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International, and Van Nuys airports.
