LOS ANGELES AIRPORT POLICE TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL TOMMY SCOTT MEMORIAL RUN AT LAX

(Los Angeles, California – May 7, 2013) Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Police Division will host its Second Annual 5K Memorial Run tomorrow, May 8, beginning 7:30 a.m. in front of the Airport Police station at 6320 West 96th Street, Los Angeles. The 5K run will be held in honor of Airport Police Officer Tommy E. Scott, who was killed in the line of duty on April 29, 2005.

Officer Scott joined Los Angeles Airport Police in 2001, and was 35 at the time of his death. He was the first Airport Police officer to be killed in the line of duty during the 59-year history of the force. Prior to joining the force, he served 15 years with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Officer Scott was killed while stopping a suspicious man, William Sadowski, in a vehicle near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Sadowski was convicted of carjacking and first-degree murder on November 16, 2009,, and was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said, “I am proud to be associated with such a fine group of people who are dedicated to preserving the memory of a great man.’”

Officer Scott’s parents, Hubert and JoAnn Carter-Scott, are scheduled to attend. He is also survived by a brother, Hubert Scott, Jr.

The route for the 5K memorial run begins at the Airport Police station, crosses the 96th Street bridge, turns north onto Sepulveda Boulevard, west onto Westchester Parkway, south onto a stretch of Lincoln Boulevard commemorated to Officer Scott and where a memorial was installed against the north perimeter fence of LAX, and ends at the police station.

No full road closures will occur. However, temporary lane closures will occur when the runners and police vehicle escorts reach each leg of the route. Motorists are advised to use caution while runners are in the area.

The 5K run is open to all law-enforcement personnel with no registration fee. However, donations may be made to the Tommy E. Scott Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Association of Airport Employees.

The Los Angeles Airport Police Division is the nation's premier, aviation law-enforcement agency with over 1,100 specially trained police officers, security officers, and civilian staff protecting Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International, and Van Nuys airports.
