UPDATE ON VAN NUYS AIRPORT (VNY) RUNWAY 16R REHABILITATION PROJECT
Los Angeles World Airports has embarked on a significant project that will greatly improve the condition of the main runway at Van Nuys Airport (VNY), 16R. A great deal of thoughtful planning work has already been done, and we continue toward commencement of construction work sometime in 2013.
Recent media reports have questioned the safety of 16R and this in turn has caused anxiety among some operators at VNY. To be clear, safety at the airport has always been and remains our number one. Safety will continue to be our main priority in the future as well.
Our Airport Operations staff are well-trained and experienced professionals in all areas of the airfield, and they perform multiple, daily inspections of both runways to ensure the surface areas are capable of handling the thousands of take-offs and landings each month. From time to time, we do undertake repair work to any areas of the runway and taxiway system on an as needed basis. This is typical of any airport—especially those facilities that experience a good amount of use and have been in service for many years like VNY.
All aviation users of VNY should have confidence that our airport is safe and ready to use and support the many individuals and businesses that rely on this important asset that serves the City of Los Angeles, the Region, and all areas beyond.
