Students are welcomed to LAX by LAWA staff and local partners on Oct. 16 for the 9th Annual Aviation Career Day.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) recently held two Aviation Career Days at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY), in partnership with several business and community partners, providing a unique opportunity for students from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and other local schools to explore careers in the aviation industry.

“At Los Angeles World Airports, we believe that engaging with our communities, especially our youth, is vital for the future of the aviation industry,” said Rob Lowe, Chief People and Culture Officer, Los Angeles World Airports. “Our Aviation Career Days not only provide students with a firsthand look at the diverse opportunities within this dynamic field, but also empower them to envision themselves as the next generation of aviation leaders and professionals. We are proud to partner with local schools and organizations, and are thankful for their support in helping us shape our community.”

The programs at both events included a lineup of interactive activities that allowed students to engage with experts and professionals about aviation careers, and learn more about airport operations at LAX and VNY. The 9th annual LAX event on Oct. 16, which was held on the airfield ramp at the Flight Path Museum, featured commercial aircraft, equipment demonstrations, and representatives from more than 40 agencies, including airlines, law enforcement, construction firms and more. At the VNY event on Oct. 24, students were able to see the renowned firefighting Super Scoopers used by the Los Angeles County Fire Department to combat fires during wildfire season, as well as other notable aircraft. All attendees also received airfield tours at each event for a more in-depth look at the different types of activities that go on at an airport.

"Investing in the education of our students and future workforce is crucial for our industry and our region," said Van Nuys Airport Manager Jacob Haik. "A hands-on, interactive day at Van Nuys Airport not only helps empower students of the San Fernando Valley, it provides them with invaluable insights and knowledge about career possibilities in aviation."

During the LAX event, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines had commercial aircraft open for viewing. Students were able to go aboard the aircraft, and talk to flight and operations crew members. Other aircraft included a private jet provided by Atlantic Aviation, a NASA F-18, a Customs and Border Protection helicopter, and single engine planes from the Santa Monica Flyers and Sling Pilot Academy. Local colleges with aviation and technical programs, architectural and engineering firms, public safety agencies, construction companies and cargo handlers were also represented.

Students attended from over 20 Los Angeles Unified School District schools, including Grant Senior High, Los Angeles Senior High, Marshall Senior High, North Hollywood Senior High, San Fernando Senior High, Van Nuys Senior High and more.

BOther participating schools included Bellflower High School, Corona High School, Culver City, Canyon High School, DaVinci, El Segundo, City Honors International Preparator School, Inglewood High School, Inglewood Continuation High School, Morningside High School, Pacific Lutheran, College Bridge Academy, Paramount and Hawthorne High School.
