Students Receive a Job Shadow Jump Start on Careers in Aviation
On February 2nd, aviation-related business mentors were greeted by 34 students from Van Nuys High School eager to learn about the diverse career opportunities at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) during Groundhog Job Shadow Day. This annual event is held in partnership with Junior Achievement of Southern California (JASC).
Students began with a trip through aviation past and present while touring the airport and learning about its daily operations. Job Shadow participants then met with their mentors for a glimpse into the working world of aviation, gaining industry insight and an up-close look at how skills learned in the classroom are put into action in the workplace.
Mentors from businesses all around the airport – including Aeroplex/Aerolease, Castle & Cooke Aviation, LAFD Fire Station #114, North Valley Occupational Center (NVOC), Corsair Aviation, The Park VNY, Sun Air Jets, Skybird Aviation, and VNY’s own Airport Operations and Facilities Maintenance departments – were excited to give participants a head-start on career opportunities. As an added bonus, students are treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the perks, responsibilities and operations of these vital businesses.
“We enjoy being able to host this event at the airport,” said Brandon Nunn, VNY Airport Guide and event coordinator. “It gives VNY staff and airport businesses the chance to teach these students about aviation while affording them a glimpse into a normal day in the workplace and educating them about the career opportunities in their community.”
